These are the perfect middle ground between SL and ASL. I actually went back to playing the original SL with Cross of Iron for many, many years. I appreciated what it was - I just wasn't the sort of guy that had the amount of time needed to devote to it. The versatility, detail and sheer amount of modules was like no other system. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I thought ASL was bad. However I really felt I spent too much time in the rules book then on the game board so I didn't buy any follow up modules.

The manual was much better and made a great reference. I skipped GI: AoV when it was released.ĪSL came along and I bought the rules folder and Beyond Valor. The complexity and number of rules exceptions was getting in the way of the fun factor of the original. When I bought Crescendo of doom I started thinking okay, this has probably gone on long enough. Then I moved up to Cross of Iron when it was released (which updated tank rules and added some other great stuff). Unfortunately it made the manual a poor reference book after you worked your way through it. This was the perfect style for learning a complex wargame easily and efficiently. Then it gave you some more rules for the second scenario. The manual was very procedural and gave you enough rules in to play the first scenario. I had the advantage of starting with the original Squad Leader game the year it was released. Please, if you have any other hex-and-counter recommendations, I’d love to hear them!
